What ceiling height does indoor padel need?
Ceiling height is the first thing to check before you fall in love with a building for indoor padel. Here’s what the numbers mean in practice.
Indoor padel needs at least 6 meters (about 20 feet) of clear height above the court, and 8 meters (about 26 feet) is recommended for new facilities. Clear height means the lowest point of anything overhead, including beams, ducts, sprinklers and light fixtures, not the roof peak.
Why height matters so much
Lobs are one of padel’s core shots. When a ball clips a beam or light, the point stops and the game suffers. Low ceilings also make lighting harder, because fixtures end up close to players’ eyes.
The numbers
| Clear height | What it means |
|---|---|
| Under 6 m (under ~20 ft) | Generally too low for proper padel |
| 6 to 8 m (~20 to 26 ft) | Workable, especially for recreational play |
| 8 m and up (~26 ft and up) | Recommended for new and competition facilities |
How to measure an existing building
- Find the lowest overhead element across the whole court footprint, not just the center.
- Include roof trusses, beams, HVAC ducts, sprinkler lines, cable trays and any planned lights.
- Check pitched roofs carefully. The eaves may be much lower than the ridge.
- Map the column grid. You need a clear 20 by 10 meter area plus space for the structure, and columns can’t sit inside it.
Buildings that often work
- Warehouses and light industrial units with high eaves
- Former sports halls and indoor tennis buildings
- Large-span agricultural or event buildings
- Purpose-built steel structures or air-supported domes
Other things to check
Floor slab condition and flatness, fire exits, ventilation, parking and zoning for sports use all come into play once height checks out. It’s worth getting a site assessment before signing a lease.
Common questions
Is 7 meters enough?
For most recreational and club play, yes. It’s between the common minimum of 6 meters and the 8 meters recommended for new builds.
Can I lower the court instead of raising the roof?
Sometimes. Excavating to gain height is possible but expensive, and drainage and structural work add up quickly.
Does a dome or tent structure work?
Air-supported and tensioned structures are used for padel in some places. They still need to meet the same clear height over the whole court.
